In School Stem Programs

We teach our students…

  • Strategic Innovation, beginning in the early Elementary Grades, with building on a culture of curiosity
  • Engineering in a Lower School STEM and Design Lab with continually re-purposing robotics systems, electronic components, and the like, involving the design of interactive structures & smart robots programmed with sensors and actuators
  • Physical Computing – robotics & engineering – providing a tactile context for Programming/Coding – with designing & debugging taking two forms:  hardware and software
  • Design Thinking Methodology & Prototyping implementing Iterative Development & Testing
  • Project-Based Learning in an authentic context of real world, problem-solving with building 21st Century Skills and, with ultimately developing the capacity of young learners to become global leaders and innovators

We, provide our In-School (& Summer Camp) STEM Education Programs at Allendale Columbia School, an independent school in Rochester, NY – where “the world is our classroom” – with having the academic freedom, as well as enthusiastic support, from our students, parents, colleagues, school board members and, administrators for our innovative teaching and real-world, hands-on applications of engineering and technology principles and, professional practices, for young learners. Our numerous and global, corporate, organizational, and collegiate partnerships provide authentic and relevant STEM learning opportunities for our young students. In this exciting and global learning environment, our STEM programs,  continue to dynamically evolve!

We provide a hands-on learning context infused with dynamically evolving technologies and classroom tested, proven instructional strategies leading to successful learning outcomes for today’s classrooms of diverse learners. Our STEM students are continually challenged to dig deeper, and think creatively, with developing high-level, problem-solving and critical thinking skills leading to innovative solutions to the problems they are posed. After all, we are preparing students for jobs that don’t even exist yet!

As practicing STEM teachers, we hold unannounced design review sessions, beginning in 4th grade and, modeled after our own specific corporate experiences. Students must comment on their code starting in 2nd grade with designing and building interactive structures and smart robots programmed with sensors and actuators. Our 5th grade students learn to program in RobotC – an industry standard, text-based programming language typically taught at the high school and college levels. As early as the 1st grade, our students field-test and report out to actual development teams in collaboration with our numerous and global, collegiate and corporate partnerships…

Our young students are provided opportunities to learn alongside STEM professionals, college students, and even other school peers from around the world. Whether field-testing for software development teams, or, having college students come in to test the computer games they have designed and programmed, our students continue to experience authentic, relevant, and engaging STEM learning experiences.

Most exciting of all, our students are immersed in Project-Based Learning with building 21st century skills and, with ultimately developing their capacity to become global leaders and innovators!
