Developing a STEM-Focused, Elementary Optics Program

In collaboration with several of our corporate and collegiate partners, we spent the school year pilot-testing a comprehensive, Elementary Optics Program across multiple grade levels in our STEM classes at Allendale Columbia School in Rochester, NY.

Months prior to planning out the development of our optics curricula, we researched, tested, and selected specific, quality components in our efforts to integrate a strong STEM-focus. In addition, we selected components that could also be re-purposed across multiple grade levels. Collaborating with our corporate partners, we continued to fine-tune the integration of the SparkFun Digital Sandbox microcontrollers as well as the Laser Classroom Light Blox & Optics Components. In fact, we continue to work collaboratively with Colette DeHarpporte, Edupreneur and Founder, the Laser Classroom, with creating additional optics components and classroom supplies with ultimately developing a STEM-focused, turn-key, Elementary Optics Program…

Below, we have provided some snapshots of our year-long journey with providing our young STEM students a meaningful learning experience with completing real-world optics labs, programming digital and analog LEDs on microcontrollers, and so much more!

We are a team of female, former corporate engineers turned NYS certified teachers, finishing up our 5th year as STEM teachers at Allendale Columbia School. We are passionate about developing STEM fluency, beginning in the early elementary years, for sustaining interest in the STEM disciplines as students progress on to their middle and high school years.
